The project engaged 17,085 households by linking them to markets for information, finance, inputs, equipment and sale of produce among others.  

 

Project Summary

FCI partnered with APHIA plus Western Kenya to implement Value Chain Development intervention in four pilot sites in Western Kenya i.e. Cheptais, Mumias, Manga and Rangwe districts. The project engaged 17,085 households; linking them to markets for information, finance, inputs, equipment and sales of produce among others. The aim of this project was to address contextual factors affecting health such as poverty, food insecurity, illiteracy, unsafe water, environment and socio-cultural norms (Social Determinants of Health, SDH). FCI promoted interventions in value chain development that are not only market driven but also suitable for capacity, context and culture of the targeted communities.

Notable achievements in this project include : 

  • Registration of households and introduction of Commercial Village Model.
  • Formation of 8 Commercial Villages comprised of 69CPGS .
  • Traditional African Vegetables (TAVs), pulses, poultry , groundnut, soybeans, sweet potatoes and beans were  found  to be viable enterprises.
  • Strategic partnerships with MOA were developed,71 buyers were profiled and farmer mobilization was intensified.
  • Capacity building sessions on various aspects e.g. value addition ,post-harvest management and storage were conducted .
  • Nutrition and other household initiatives including savings schemes, rural credit, investments and financial inclusion  were undertaken.

  • 12 formal and 9 informal markets with 71 traders were profiled and linked to the CVs.
  • 1,333 project households were registered and introduced to Commercial Village Model.
  • 8 Commercial Villages comprised of 69 CPGS were formed.
